How to Clean a Chalky, Dull or Oxidized Garage Door

Cleaning a garage door is a relatively straightforward task. Here are step-by-step directions to guide you through the process:

  1. Gather your supplies: You'll need the following items:

    • A bucket of water

    • Mild detergent - EZPrep, Dawn or Joy dish soap work well

    • Sponge or microfiber clothPrep Pad or soft scrubbing pad to remove stains or chalky oxidation. The back of a blue kitchen sponge works well and is not too abrasive.

    • Garden hose for rinsing

    • Soft-bristle brush (optional)

    • Step-Ladder (if necessary)

  2. Pre-rinse the door to remove all cobwebs, dust and dirt.

  3. Mix a small amount of mild detergent, like Dawn or EZPrep, with water in a bucket. Do not apply this solution to the garage door until it is wet. Doing so could create spots that are hard to remove.

  4. Clean the garage door panels: Dip the sponge or cloth into the detergent mixture and gently scrub one panel at a time. Start from the top and work your way down, using a scrubbing motion to remove oxidation and chalk. . Rinse the sponge or cloth frequently in the bucket.  Do not let the soap solution dry on the door - you may need to rinse the door partway through the cleaning if the door starts to dry.

  5. For tough oxidation, use a Prep Pad or a soft scrubbing sponge. Be careful not to use excessive force, as it may scratch or damage the garage door surface. If necessary, repeat the cleaning process until the oxidation is removed.

  6. Rinse the door: Once you've cleaned all the panels, rinse the entire door thoroughly with clean water. You can use a garden hose and an optional soft brush to remove the detergent residue and dirt.  An alternative to the brush is a microfiber towel.

  7. Dry the door: Wipe the garage door dry using a clean, dry cloth or allow it to air dry naturally. This step helps prevent water spots or streaks from forming.

  8. If you see that the door is still dull after being cleaned, you can restore it to look new again.  Everbrite Coating will restore the color and luster of the metal to look new again.  How the door looks when it is clean and wet is how the door will look restored.

  9. Apply Everbrite Coating by wiping it on the clean door to make your door look like new.

By following these step-by-step directions, you can effectively clean your garage door and help keep it looking its best for years.  Everbrite Coating will also protect the door from fading, chalking, oxidation, rust and will make it easier to keep clean.

HOW TO IMPROVE THE LOOK OF YOUR HOME

Originally, the paint on your garage door was baked on.  Some doors have faux wood grain that can be lost if painted.  Don't paint your door and lose the original finish. Many of the additives that used to make paint last a long time have been removed from paint due to health and environmental concerns.  (Lead is one of the additives that has been removed)  Paint that is not baked on tends to fade faster and may even bubble and peel.  You can easily restore the finish of your garage door by restoring it with Everbrite Coating.

Everbrite Coating is a tough, durable clear coating that restores the color and luster of doors and will protect your paint from fading, corrosion, oxidation, acid rain and more.

  • Restore the original color and luster of your door.

  • Less mess than painting.

  • Easier and less expensive than painting.

  • Protect the door hardware at the same time.

  • Everbrite Coating lasts much longer than repainting.

  • Coated surfaces are much easier to keep clean and repel dirt.

  • Restore painted metal garage doors, rusted patina garage doors and even copper doors.

Everbrite Coating is easy to apply.  First, clean your garage door. Then, apply the clear coating. NO buffing, NO rubbing. Just apply, let dry and ENJOY the new look of your door.

HOW CAN I KNOW IF EVERBRITE COATING WILL RESTORE MY DOORS ?

You can test your garage door, front door, window frames or other painted metal to see if they can be restored.

  1. Clean an area of the surface with a mild soap and water.  A few drops of dish soap work well to make a cleaning solution.  You can use a sponge or scrub pad on the back of a kitchen sponge.

  2. Scrub evenly with the soap solution.

  3. Rinse well.

  4. Observe the clean painted metal when it is STILL WET.

  5. Everbrite Coating will make the metal look like it does when it is clean and wet. If the metal looks good when it is clean and wet, then the surface can be restored with Everbrite Coating.

Everbrite™ is easy to apply. First, clean the door, siding or window frames. Then, apply the clear, durable coating. NO buffing. NO rubbing. Just apply, let dry and ENJOY.

Customer Reviews for Garage & Front Doors

"Wonderful product! I purchased the Garage Door Kit in Satin Finish to restore and seal my rusted metal finish garage door. The original sealer that was used on top of the metal had oxidized over time. Very impressed with the results! As you can see in the before and after photos, the Everbrite beautifully restored the look of the door. I live in Southern Arizona, so hopefully the sealer will withstand our intense sun and heat. Highly recommend Everbrite Coating." ~David R., Tucson, AZ
